The GOAT Herder Thread: Retelling MJ's story through MyCareer builds

    Posted: 15 Dec 2019 08:24 AM PST

    Hey all,

I love MJ and wanted to start a discussion thread on how we could tell stories of the Greatest Players of all Time through our 2k builds. I grew up in the 80's and 90's watching MJ every Sunday on NBC, so I always like the challenge of creating a realistic Jordan Build. Capturing him accurately in a MyPlayer build is immense fun, but a big challenge too because he remained the GOAT despite a significant change in his game at least twice.

If you never watched him play, and want to know how to learn about his game, use these sources. 1. By Any Means Basketball has the very best, no frills, breakdown of his offensive game (https://youtu.be/Xh_Y_dYNlVM).
    2. MJ, himself, also made a basketball coaching video where he essentially tells you some of his most important tools he relied upon to score and play defense (https://youtu.be/UECvWpSBfU8). 3. Look at his historic stats. 3. Watch a few of his games. There are several YouTube channels that break down most of MJ's old games down to watchable, 5-10 min videos.

WHAT YOU SHOULD NOT RELY ON: 1. Naming similarities in the MyPlayer Builder. 2. MyTeam versions of MJ. 3. Versions of MJ on the Historic rosters in 2k.

    Version 1: "Air" Jordan (1984-89):

Larry Bird said he was "God disguised as Michael Jordan." Despite not having a fully-developed jumper, Jordan was so physically head-and-shoulders above every other player to come before him, he won DPOY, dunk contest, scoring title, and MVP in the same year. He was so dominant, the Pistons had to foul him or triple team him the moment he crossed half-court. Jordan also had the 2nd or 3rd biggest hands in NBA history, giving him unparalleled ability to block, steal, rebound, and change his shot mid-air.

How to play with this build: This build is a KING if you simply play like a slasher and not a shooter. Think of it as the Greek Freak in guard form: You can physically take over an entire game single-handedly with your physical dominance. On offense, you should primarily use screens off-ball to get cuts to the basket and for catch and shoot opportunities. Otherwise, use the triple threat to iso and drive hard and draw fouls (you have relentless finisher and acrobat: use it and hit the cup like Russell Westbrook). With rim protector, fastbreak finisher, and showtime, if you play well on both sides of the court, you will VERY quickly drive up your takeover meter. In takeover, this build is unstoppable. On defense, think of yourself more like a free safety, and not the corner back: look for an opportunity to gamble and cheat by sneaking up and blocking on help defense as the shot clock winds down or if a player gets by you on a drive: This was how MJ got most of his strips and he was athletic enough to pull it off. To properly simulate his legendary hand size, and small frame, blocking, rebounding, and stealing badges are prioritized over Clamps (Recall that MJ's style of man-to-man defense often allowed the player to blow by him, but leave the player exposed to MJ's giant quick paws for a strip or unsuspecting block from behind.) This build can also rebound effectively with bronze rebound chaser (bronze makes that big of a difference).

I cannot stress this enough: MJ was never a dribble-gawd. He used simple, effective moves to get to the basket (like Kawhi Leonard does today). While this build can dribble well, MJ's primary means of scoring in iso was either with his back to the basket or a quick explosive drive out of a triple threat. He did not rely on fancy dribble moves, ankle-breakers, stepbacks, or long range shooting to get buckets consistently.

This build is designed to put a bad team on its back and push hard. If you are going to take this build to the Knicks, Magic, or Hornets, this is the build for you. The lack of dimer or bailout signifies the lack of priority in triangle offense and ballhoggishness.

Version 2: PRIME Michael Jordan and the 1st 3-Peat (1990-93)

The only way I think you could even come close to a prime MJ build is to take the Version 1 Air Jordan build and get it to legend status. Prime MJ was a one-of-a-kind player in real life and nobody has come close to replicating his complete, overwhelmingly dominant game. Taking the Air Jordan build to legend would be about as close as you could get.

    Version 3: Fadeaway to the 2nd 3-Peat (1995-98):

Offensively, Jordan made his big transition from being an above the rim slasher, to a post-scoring slasher who could hit off 1-3 dribble jumpers from mid-range. Sam Smith of Bulls.com encapsulated this change best:

"Michael was no longer the explosive leaper he once was after being out of the game for so long and the natural effects of aging. Plus, there were the exercises and conditioning for baseball that changed his body. But he had become much stronger, even more a student of the game, and had developed an indefensible fall away move in the post. Plus, he still had the attitude and raging competitiveness, and he could dunk in your face if he needed to."

MJ used simple, highly effective moves to score in the half-court. If he was at the perimeter, his main weapon was still the triple threat jab step and quick first step. Otherwise, he used the post up and fadeaway or spin. John Starks and Gary Payton both stated MJ was the easiest player to guard because he was highly predictable but unstoppable.

On defense, Jordan still had the heart of a Lion despite size, age, and a new era of offense chasing him. He was still the league's best ball thief and was now atop the league record for blocks by any guard. He was also the leader of the Doberman Defense and pushed Scottie Pipped (a 6'7'' Two Way Slashing Playmaker SG) and Dennis Rodman (a 6'7'' PF Paint Beast). However, smaller dribble-gawds—like Allen Iverson and Mookie Blaylock—could wear MJ out playing cat and mouse. Wing slashers, like Grant Hill (who helped usher in a new era of highly athletic, slashing small forwards), could blow by MJ. Reggie Miller's Pacers used a Golden State Warrior-esq phalanx of screens with the Davis boys and Derrick McKey to wear MJ down over the course of a game.

How to play with this build: Compared to Version 1 of MJ, this is a system-oriented, team player. You can no longer single-handedly takeover a game with athleticism, but you can still be the best two-way scorer on the court if you let the game come to you and play at a slow pace. Your primary means of scoring should be 1) post ups primarily; 2) 1-3 dribble pull ups; and 3) catch and shoot on off-ball screen in mid-range. On defense, you still have all the skill to be an absolute terror: you can still strip the ball at will; however, your loss of speed, vertical, and endurance will leave you exposed to slashing playmakers. However, if you surround yourself with wing defenders, your team defense will be unstoppable. This build works best with a sharpshooter you can dump the ball to from the post and a wing defender with high Clamps.

Position: PG Attribute Pie: Red/Green Finishing: -Max close shot, driving layup/dunk Shooting -Three Point shot: 50 -Max everything else Playmaking: -Pass accuracy: 74 -Ball Handling: 78 Def/Rebounding -Max Perimeter Def, Lat. Quickness, Steal, Block, and Def Rebounding -Off rebounding: 55

    Physicals -Pie: Agility/Strength -Height: 6'6 -Weight: 215 -Wingspan: 83.7'' -Speed: 81 -Strength: 81 -Acceleration: 78 -Vertical: 60

Badge Loadout: Playmaking -Gold: Quick First Step -Bronze: Post Spin Technician, Downhill, Bail Out, and Dimer Shooting -HOF: Deep Fades -Gold: Difficult Shots (or Hot Zone Hunter) -Silver: Ranger Extender and Quick Draw -Bronze: Tireless Shooter, Deadeye, and Catch & Shoot Finishing -Gold: Acrobat -Silver: Contact Finisher -Bronze: Slithery Finisher, Back Down Punisher, and Consistent Finisher Defense/Rebounding -Gold: Defensive Leader, Chase Down Artist, Pick Dodger, Rim Protector, Pick Pocket -Silver: Interceptor -Bronze: Rebound Chaser, Tireless Defender, and Clamps

Version 4: Out of retirement at 40:

When he returned, Jordan had been out of basketball for three entire seasons and returned to basketball for the love of the game, but the game did not love him back. Virtually all of his physical gifts were gone, leaving nothing but shooting IQ behind. At this point NOBODY was scared of MJ anymore on the court: Jerry Stackhouse, Vince Carter, and O.J. Mayo among others, openly challenged MJ because they saw he was physically vulnerable, and weaker. Christopher Perznick with Medium describes how the deck was stacked against MJ when he returned to basketball.

"First, he was a 38-year-old shooting guard, a position that is largely predicated upon speed and athleticism. Even by the end of his tenure with the Bulls, his physical gifts were already in decline and he had largely eschewed driving the lane and trying to get to the rim in favor of a killer post-up game and a deadly fadeaway that was nearly impossible to defend. "What I appreciated most about Jordan's game was his ability to change his game as he got older, evolve as a player and continue getting better. It was no different with Jordan in his twilight, he became a new Jordan." And it wasn't just the aging process that was slowing him down. Following his final season with Chicago, Jordan was on vacation in the Bahamas when he sliced his right index finger with a cigar cutter, severing the tendon and requiring surgery. "The world's most famous basketball player disclosed he can no longer palm a basketball or pick it up off the dribble as deftly."[3] His giant hands and control of the basketball were instrumental in all that he could do on the court, including throw down one-handed dunks in traffic. It wasn't just his finger. In June of 2001, as Jordan was working out strenuously in an effort to decide if he were going to return to the league, he was playing in a pickup game with NBA players Antoine Walker, Ron Artest, and others, when Artest broke two of Jordan's ribs while defending him. It slowed his conditioning and foreshadowed what he would endure during his time on the Wizards." How to play with this build: Recall, this version of MJ was so inconsistent, he was benched by Doug Collins. All of his endurance badges are gone, so be careful with turbo, and don't even think about a dribble move (MJ's hands were injured). This build can post-up against a smaller player VERY effectively, but everything else will be a great challenge. You will struggle mightily to defend any modern 2k guard build. Don't be misled by the high shooting abilities either: if you are not posting up or coming off a screen, your defender should be able to stay with you pretty easily; making dribble pull ups difficult. You simply cannot lead a team with this build, but you can be an effective role-player

Position: SF Attribute Pie: Green Finishing: -Max close shot, driving layup/dunk -Standing Dunk: 54 Shooting: -Max Free Throw and Post Fade -Mid-range: 84 -Three Point shot: 65 Playmaking: -Max Ball Handle -Post Moves: 74 -Pass Accuracy: 68 Def/Rebounding -Max Perimeter Def, Lat. Quickness, Steal, and Block -Def Rebounding: 58

    Badge count: 2 Finishing 24 Shooting 8 Playmaking 2 Def/Rebounding

    Takeover: Post Scoring

Physicals -Body Type: Solid -Pie: Agility/Strength -Height: 6'6 -Weight: 218 -Wingspan: 83.7'' -Speed: 74 -Strength: 69 -Acceleration: 71 -Vertical: 52

Badge Loadout: Playmaking -Gold: Post Spin Technician -Silver: Dream Shake -Bronze: Space Creator, Unpluckable, and Bailout Shooting -HOF: Deep Fades -Gold: Deadeye, Catch & Shoot, Difficult Shots, Quick Draw, Deadeye, and Volume Shooter -Silver: Clutch Shooter, Ranger Extender -Bronze: Steady Shooter Finishing -Silver: Back Down Punisher Defense/Rebounding -Bronze: Rim Protector, Pick Pocket, and Intimidator

I rarely post, but wanted to spread some love for ya'll on Sunday. Share who your GOAT is through your builds. I would be interested to see somebody do LeBron, Kobe, Shaq, Bird, or Magic!

    This Game Is Terrible

    Posted: 15 Dec 2019 09:12 PM PST

I have never seen a game that rewards abuse and exploitation as much as this game. Every game plays one of two ways. Either the PG does the same behind back combo around screens and greens from half-court, or a slasher of some sorts does a hop step from the free-throw line, travels, and then dunks on everybody. Meanwhile, every slightly early/late jumpshot and every 2% covered layup bricks or airballs. This is the worst attempt at balance and fun, entertaining gameplay that I have ever seen!

Was looking forward to playing REC for first time.

It's my first offseason and wanted to build some VC before I start season 2 so I planned on playing REC.

Until I started and the jerseys were red and green and I'm red green color blind so all of the jerseys completely blend and become the same color. Felt so bad for my teammates I had no idea who was on my team lol

Why did 2K choose a song called "Dope" for their soundtrack...

    Posted: 15 Dec 2019 07:28 AM PST

... And then censor the word "dope" in the actual song??? Is dope an offensive word all of a sudden!? And if so why would you pick a track where that word is literally the title? I need answers.

    Best badges so far?

    Posted: 15 Dec 2019 08:02 PM PST

I've got a 6'9 PF glad cleaning lock, but I made him to be more of a defender who can drive, with a 74 3pt. I have 20 D badges, 10 shooting, and 1 and 1 for playmaking and finishing. I haven't used up any of of the badges I've earned because it seems like they're way important this year. What has been the experience so far as to the most noticably useful badges in the game? Edit. Shooting and finishing
