It'll be cool when video game announcers have really good ai

    Posted: 18 Jan 2020 08:24 PM PST

Just a random weird thought, but assuming sports video games keep getting made far in the future, presumably some day the announcers in game would actually be an intelligent ai with a voice and can make actual commentary about what's happening in the game. That's when the line between watching sports games and live sports becomes truly blurred.

    And yea, I'm pretty high

    My first toxicity story.

    Posted: 18 Jan 2020 11:51 PM PST

As I read subreddit posts here about how toxic everyone can be i always laughed it off. It never happens to me. Yes playing with idiots happens a lot. But here's my first toxic story in Rec. So imma solo rec player. I find that being a center in rec when you don't have a squad to play with is the easiest and less frustrating position to play. Today i got matched up with a shooting guard who was an offensive threat 98 over all and superstar 1 rep. As a big i don't expect to get the ball much. I do my job and get rebounds. Maybe a few blocks if I can. So today I played a game where the previously mentioned guard was your typical James Harden wanna be youtuber. Iso iso iso dribble dribble drive and kick and then blame your teammates who can't make a shot with 1.2 seconds left when you pass. So I'm open on driving lanes and of course i don't get the ball. I'm open in the paint for easy dunks but I don't get passed the ball. So I put my mic on and all I say is I'm open in the paint. He proceeds to put on his mic and his exact words were Shut up bitch. You're only here to get my rebounds And of course he proceeded to say how good of a shooter and ankle breaker he is. It was the second quarter and he was 3/8 from 3. Like I'm not mad at what he said to me personally but I'm just surprised that people really go into rec with that mindset. Like these other 4 players are here just to pad your stats. Nah I ain't about that. So whenever I inbounded I called someone other than him to come get it from me. Whenever I got a defensive board I threw to icon X no matter where he was. Everyone else on my team was on board with this as well. So no one passed to him willingly anymore. He was so mad on the mic. We ended up winning that game but he had the least amount of points. And i had 10 points from free throws lol I'm kinda mad he coasted to a win due to our efforts but that's the way it goes. Moral of the story, treat your teammates right in rec. They can hear you, you know!

Data Analysis Of Shooters In NBA 2K20 (Long Post)

    Posted: 18 Jan 2020 06:34 AM PST

Here is the PDF link to the data I gathered and will be referencing throughout; https://docdro.id/6q98qkg . If you would like to add to it, feel free to gather your data in a similar fashion and send it to me. I'll just add it to the spreadsheet and have the averages auto-update.

This is not a mindless rant. This is data-based analysis with ACTIONABLE SOLUTIONS for any issues I present. If you do not read all of it (I don't expect you to) just skip to the SOLUTIONS section and use that information as well as skimming the TL;DR

    Data Collection Process

I collected the information (3 Point Rating, 3 Point Make Percentage, Total Rec Games Played, and Win Percentage) by walking into random neighborhoods and checking players' 2k card through my in-game phone. All data is based off of Rec games. My criteria for data collected were: 90 overall or above, 70 or above 3pt rating, 100 or more rec games, and if it could be assumed they were on their main build. For example, if someone was in the park with a Sharp Facilitator with 95 3pt, but the build's only 90 overall and they have 1000+ games played, I assumed they were not on their main build and did not include them in the data.

I chose these for my criteria to get the most accurate representation of how people play on a per game basis. Non-representative inaccuracies such as a bad/good series of games, games on secondary builds, or a small sample size should be eliminated by this method. I find the data I collected to be consistent with the average 2k player, if not trending in a more positive light because of top player's whose data I collected.

    Important Data Points

Based on the 101 players whose data I collected, the average 3pt% is ~39% with a W/L ~49%.

I did not think to track the position of the player I was taking data from at first. Therefore, there are 15 players that do not factor into positional data averages but are still impacting overall averages.

Players with a 3pt rating between 70 and 79 shot 38% from 3 and won 52% of their games.

Players with a 3pt rating between 80 and 89 shot 40% from 3 and won 48% of their games.

Players with a 3pt rating between 90 and 99 shot ~39% from 3 and won 45% of their games.

Players (player, only one did) who shot between 0-9% from 3 won 27% of their games. (95)

Players who shot between 10-19% from 3 won 19.5% of their games. (2 players, 78 3pt avg)

Players who shot between 20-29% from 3 won 37.7% of their games. (13 players, 79 3pt avg)

Players who shot between 30-39% from 3 won 45.5% of their games. (38 players, 83 3pt avg)

Players who shot between 40-49% from 3 won 52.6% of their games. (30 players, 81 3pt avg)

Players who shot between 50-59% from 3 won 64.1% of their games. (16 players, 81 3pt avg)

Players (player, only one did) who shot between 60-69% from 3 won 74% of their games. (90)

54% of players whose data I collected shoot below 40% from 3. Most of which with 90+ 3pt.

Shooting 40%+ leads to winning more games than you lose, specifically at ~44%.

56% of players whose data I collected have less than 200 games played.

The number of games played does not show a consistent correlation between 3pt% or Win%

On average, the Win% of players drop as 3pt rating rises.

    Data By Position

I have 85 players track by position. Accounting for the most are SGs (29) with PGs right behind them (28). SFs (11) and Cs (13) were close in total gathered. I barely found any shooting PFs (4). ON LIMITED DATA, PFs shot the best percentage at 46%. However, factoring in sample size, PGs lead in that at 40.6% (slightly above the shooter average). Lowest being SFs at a depressing 35% from 3. Despite having the second lowest make percentage (by .2), shooting Cs win the most games at 53.7%.

    1

The data shows that an above average shooter at the PG is the most important factor in winning games. At 40.6% from 3 and a win percentage of 50.4% with the second largest sample size, it's obvious that this is what is most important for success in the Rec. From my personal recollection, PG also had the largest outliers in 3pt and win percentage.

Unsuspecting shooter PGs (70-79) see the highest win% (56.7%) and make percentage (41.8%) out of all PGs and all positions, aside from the small sample size at the PF.

    2

The data shows that an average or poor shooter at the SG is the most detrimental to team success. By far the lowest win% for builds with a 70-79 3pt rating (38.4%). Also generally has the lowest win% per position (44.6%), likely meaning that the SG either has the least impact on wins or the largest impact in losses.

    3

The data shows, through a very small sample size of 11, SFs are down right atrocious shooters. Even in the 90+ 3pt rating area, they're shooting sub 40%. The study group did have STRONG outliers at both ends of the spectrum in terms of win% and 3pt% so maybe it's a result of extremes. That said, the strong outliers carried their teams as hard as good PGs. This is a very interesting situation that I'll cover later in the issues and solution section***

    4

The data shows that nobody makes shooting PFs. It makes sense because you're often better off making a SF/C. More badges, better matchups, and generally better builds. Hard to draw any conclusions from the data gathered so all I'll say is most people are smart enough to make a shooting big at the C, make interior bigs at the PF, or give up on their shooting PF before 90+/100+ rec games.

    5

The data shows that centers can shoot extremely poorly and still win. In fact, they're the only position that can shoot poorly and not seriously negatively impact their team. Only .2% away from being the worst shooting position (35.3%) yet easily sitting atop the win% ladder (53.8%). It makes sense due to the fact that they have the lowest average 3pt rating by position (75), but from personal experience, these guys are shooting wide opens, in catch and shoot scenarios, typically in the corner. Make no mistake; centers are by far the worst pure shooters of any position. The reason they're able to maintain such a high win% is because of 1) two absolutely massive outliers at a staggering 88% and 84%!!! (there was also a C that shot 12% and had a 23% win% so it's fine) 2) their ability to impact the game in other, more important ways. Even as a shooting big, you can dominate the game with your interior presence on defense/boards. It appears you can shoot like your controller doesn't work as long as you don't give up easy points inside and rebound well. Make no mistake of it; shooting Cs are by far the best playstyle+position combo to win games.

    Issues

The biggest issue that pops right out from this data is PEOPLE SHOOT WORSE AS THEIR 3PT RATING INCREASES. At every position. The issue is obvious; people force shots if they see themselves as sharpshooters. The problem is, on average, these "sharpshooters" aren't shooting any better than those with a sub 80 3pt rating aka unsuspecting shooters. These "sharpshooters" are also losing a majority of their games, whereas the unsuspecting shooters are winning the majority of their games. So to clarify the obvious, FORCING SHOTS BECAUSE OF A HIGH 3PT RATING IS DETRIMENTAL TO THE TEAM.

Let's discuss SFs and their abysmal shooting. In my opinion, it's a game knowledge issue. Most people that understand 2K20 aren't going to build a shooter at the 3 when they'd get more badges at the 2 or be taller and (consequently) more versatile at the 4. There's also the issue of spreading the build too thin. Increasing the 3pt rating makes your build worse overall, decreasing the 3pt rating takes away badges you need to be consistent, the compromise makes it even worse since your ratings are still spread out AND you lose shooting badges. You're just stuck being an ok shooter with nothing else to back your game up, instead of being good at something. SFs are supposed to be the most versatile, Jack of All Trades build, but it really doesn't work well in 2k. Especially 2K20 when doing that spreads your attributes and badges so thing.

Here's a gigantic issue, THERE IS NO CONSISTENT SIGN OF IMPROVEMENT FROM TOTAL GAMES PLAYED. What are you people doing? Just spamming games and praying your shot falls? Our person with the most games played (955) shoots THIRTY NINE PERCENT (75 3pt rating). Number two at 807 shoot THIRTY EIGHT PERCENT (95+ 3pt rating!!!). Part of my collection process was ensuring that these players were on their main builds. I can say with certainty that these two played a vast majority of their games on their shooting builds. I did have some faith restored by some of the other players with a lot of games, but they had insane win% so I know they're squaded up which kind of takes away from how well they shoot. I'm sure it's not just shooters that are spamming games without improving, but I just think that missing a majority of the ONLY shoot that I take over the course of a couple hundred games would make me stop and think "Hey, I should really work on this". Pure insanity.

One of the reasons I made the requirement 100+ rec games is because at the 50-90 game area I saw some of the worst shooters in 2k. From personal recollection and estimation, people in that range were shooting much closer to 30%. 3pt rating didn't matter. Position didn't matter. Just terrible all around. If I dropped the criteria to 50+ rec games then the 3pt% would drop ~5% and win% ~10%. Not an exaggeration. I guess the good news is it's mid January and they've only subjected 50 games worth of people to their play.

    Solutions

    Bases -

First off, make sure you understand how shooting in 2k works. Yes, your rating is important to make shots, but the base of your jumpshot is THE most important aspect of your shooting. 99 3pt rating with the wrong jumper will having you shooting… sub 40% like most do apparently. Preface, PERFECTLY TIMING A SHOT DOES NOT ENSURE IT WILL GREEN/GO IN. YOU CAN FULL WHITE A FRAME PERFECT RELEASE. This is why bases are important. Bases have three major factors: Shot Speed, Make Percentage, and Green Percentage. Shot Speed is self explanatory. Make Percentage is the percent your shot will fall when not green if you time your shot perfectly. For example, if a base has a 50% Make Percentage, you should make 5/10 perfectly timed shots if none of them are green. Green Percentage is the same thing, but for green releases. So for example, if a base has a 30% Green Percentage, you should GREEN 3/10 perfectly timed shots. You could potentially make more, but 3/10 should be green. 2K Labs does a great job of testing bases and finding what's best in the game. BUT they charge like $8 a month and, quite frankly, that isn't worth it for basically everyone that plays this game. However, their information does occasionally get leaked. From those leaks I've gathered that THE BEST BASES FOR SHOOTERS ARE: 49, 85, 98, 105, 107, Curry, Jordan, Melo, Walker, Wall. Try a few and see what you like.

Note that releases play into shot contests. A high arcing release will REDUCE THE CONTEST ON YOUR SHOT. Here are some high arcing releases to put on one of the aforementioned bases: Release 27, Release 64, Larry Bird, Stephen Curry, Pau Gasol, Andre Igoudala, Dirk Nowitzki, Zach Randolph

    Badges -

I will name some badges you need and explain why based on a NEED, WANT, and AVOID criteria. Need and avoid are obvious. Want is something you should look to equip once your needs are fulfilled.

    NEED (Gold+) -

Quick Draw: You need to be able to get a shot off without being contested easily. Punish defenders that are sagging off of you or helping inside.

Catch and Shoot: If you're a shooter that can't dribble, you'll be getting most of your looks in a catch and shoot scenario. Be able to capitalize on that.

Deadeye: You need to be a reliable shooter even through a light contest. Deadeye makes that possible and then some. At HOF, you can make a couple of heavy contests because that's just how 2K is. Accept it and exploit it.

Range Extender: It activates often because your make percentage is constantly decreasing as you step farther and farther away from the 3pt line. If you aren't almost touching the line, your make percentage is going down! It's also an important badge to create even more space on the court and make you a legitimate threat from the hash. Hash shooter is a legitimate position.

Hot Zone Hunter*: THIS BADGE IS ONLY GOOD IF YOU MAKE SHOTS ONLINE. USE THESE BADGE POINTS ELSEWHERE IF YOU HAVE NO HOTZONES. Otherwise, this badge makes you automatic from your spots. This is the badge that will leave people double teaming you once you cross half court.

    Want (Silver/Gold) -

Green Machine: This is a need if you have 24+ badges and it should be on HOF. If you green two shots in a row, the rest of your shots have a larger green window. It resets after a non-green/miss. HOWEVER, the game is basically over if you green two in a row and don't take a terrible shot.

Corner Specialist: Best badge for unsuspecting shooters. Prioritize this over HZH if you have to choose. Self explanatory badge, you make more shots in the corner. Also works in the mid-range. Very effective on Silver if you're struggling to allocate badge points. I'd almost say don't use this badge above Silver.

Difficult Shots: Increases make percentage on moving jumpshots. Opens up your shot selection and is a soft fix for 2K20's issue of dragging players instead of letting them set their feet. Forced into a moving shot? No worries, you have a badge for that.

Volume Shooter: Increases your make percentage as you take more shots, regardless of if you make or miss them. I BELIEVE it activates after TWO shots. This is a personal preference and no data backs up this badge being anything more than filler. However, I notice my Floor General shows an increase in Make Probability when someone has VS equipped and has taken two shots. Could redeem you from a rough start, worth a shot.

Clutch Shooter/Hot Start: These badges are situational and conditional. Use them at your own risk. Clutch Shooter increases your make percentage in the final moments of the game (4th and OT). This is the perfect badge if you have a team and they always depend on you to take that last shot or if you don't have a team and you don't want any randoms taking the last shot because "it was a better look". Take your half court leaner at the buzzer with confidence. Hot Start increases your make percentage IF you make your first shot UNTIL you miss. High risk, high reward, especially when paired with Green Machine and Volume Shooter

    Avoid -

Steady Shooter: Unless you take terrible shots on purpose for some reason, this badge only serves as a detriment. Decreases your open shot make percentage in exchange for increasing your contested shot make percentage. UNLESS you are constantly forced to take bad shots by your group of friends as part of the "scheme" or you do not want to have to depend on randoms at any point in time, this is not a good badge.

Tireless Shooter: Unless you are an iso player that for some reason does not have Handles For Days, this badge is basically useless. Increase your make percentage when fatigued. But why would you be fatigued if you're moving off ball? It's very situational and based on what you have to do. It rarely comes into play unless you're a ball dominate shooter, going against multiple locks, with nowhere to pass.

Flexible Release: Unless you plan on straight up not timing your jumpshot, this is useless. It only activates on TERRIBLY timed shots. Basically troll shots. Absolutely useless unless if you have serious connection issues, insist on still playing online, and refuse to get off a shooter.

    3pt Increase Conundrum -

Ok. I get it. You think you can make everything because you have a high 3pt rating. Well the data shows otherwise. In fact, you're the worst shooters in the game. Congrats. Just please, be realistic with the shots you take. Limit test in MyCareer. Understand your shooting window and how far you can push your shot selection.

    Play To Improve -

Most people play for fun and have no serious potential/desire to become a 2K League player or even a comp player in general. HOWEVER, if you have a 90+ overall player and over 100 rec games you have invested enough time into 2k to no longer consider yourself a casual player. You've put in at least a week of playtime into 2K20 if you're at that point. YOU ARE NOT CASUAL. That's perfectly fine too. 2k is a fun and addictive game that a lot of people play as their only game. All that being said, you should not be ok doing so poorly at the thing you're supposed to be good at. Imagine if slashers missed 60% of their attempts. They'd either find a better way to get inside or quit playing the game. For some reason shooters are perfectly fine with being terrible at their "thing". To be clear, this is not the NBA. 40% FROM 3 IS NOT GOOD IN 2K. We've all been a part of a game where someone is shooting 70%+ from 3 with 10+ shots. It's not a fluke. You can truly do that every game if you TAKE GOOD SHOTS and PRACTICE YOUR JUMPER. Even then, if you've played hundreds of games in your role, you should be getting better at it just by time spent. Our two spammers (with 800+ games!!!) are shooting sub 40%... that is bad. Don't be them. Learn what shots you can take. Learn how to time your shot. You will not shoot anywhere close to 40% that far along if you take half a second per game to learn what you can do.

In short, don't just get into games and exist. Don't only blame your team for losses when you're shooting 4/10. You CAN do better. Your shooting can single handedly elevate your team to victory. If you're putting weeks/months into 2k, don't be bad at it.

    TL;DR

Biggest takeaways from all of this are:

If you are shooting above 39%, you are technically a good shooter. Congratulations!

If you win more than 49% of your games, you are good at 2k. Congratulations!

Being an above average shooter wins you more games. Duh.

You are more likely to win games if you're an ok shooter (70-79 3pt rating) rather than a great one (80+ 3pt rating), likely because of better shot selection.

If you are a bad shooter, be a bad shooter at the 5. Because all bigs are terrible shooters, no matter the 3pt rating or badges apparently.

If you want to make a non-shooting build or an ok shooting build, do not make it at the 2.

If you are a 2, make shots and take better shots. You are your own win condition.

Having shooting ability at the 1 or 5 typically leads to wins. If you're building a squad, build it like this.

Play to improve. You aren't a casual with a 90+ player and 100+ games. There's no excuse to be as bad as the data is showing.

Dear 2k, PLEASE make Boot camp a regular thing.

    Posted: 18 Jan 2020 01:11 PM PST

By far the most fun I've had playing 2k online. I especially love how the matchmaking worked. I wish all of the park worked like that. I think it would be really nice if they turned Bootcamp into 3 different events. 75 and under, 76-85, 86+. I played for 4 hours and had 1 game where the other team spammed a cheese move., which is something every regular game in park has...

EDIT: Also something else I forgot to mention was the fact I was able to play about 20 full games in a 4-hour span which was amazing. I didn't have to run around the park for 20 mins trying to find a decent game.

    Please 2k make it happen!

NBA 2K real like trade updates

    Posted: 18 Jan 2020 08:03 PM PST

I would suggest that real-like trade and player updated ratings be reflected in MyCareer on the following conditions:

The MyCareer season is still at season 1 regardless of current calendar is before or after the trade deadline, or on playoff. As long as it's still Season 1, update realistic rosters into MyCareer.
